SEXUAL ORIENTATION & GENDER IDENTITY EDUCATION

WE ASK BECAUSE WE CARE

In compliance with State of New Jersey requirements regarding data collection, St. Joseph’s Health has added questions about sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) in our patient-check-in process. Asking these questions allows us to provide everyone we serve with the culturally responsive, patient-centered services they need.  As part of the patient intake we will verify these questions each time you register, just like when we verify your other demographic information. Should patients feel uncomfortable disclosing this information, they may choose the option “choose not to disclose.”

WHY ASK ABOUT SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND GENDER IDENTITY (SOGI)

Research shows that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual or gender minority (LGBTQ+) people have unique health needs. They also experience significant health disparities and barriers to accessing health care services. Capturing SOGI information helps us to deliver appropriate health services to our LGBTQ+ patient population. At St. Joseph’s Health we want to learn as much as we can about all of our patients so that we can provide you the best possible care.

HEALTH EQUITY DATA COLLECTION

The State of New Jersey has a guiding principle that all community members will have Fair and Just opportunities regardless of:

  • Race
  • Ethnicity
  • Gender
  • Age Group
  • Disability status
  • English Proficiency
  • Gender Identity
  • Literacy
  • Geography
  • Housing
  • Income
  • Sexual Orientation
  • Veteran Status

The goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Jersey residents. No patient will be discriminated against; all our welcome.  St. Joseph’s Health Registration team, as well as other staff members, will ask about race, ethnicity, language, sexual orientation and gender identity. Asking these questions is consistent with our non-discrimination policies and federal, state, and local laws prohibiting discrimination.
