St. Joseph’s Healthcare System has Emergency Medicine departments at both St. Joseph’s University Medical Center (SJUMC) in Paterson and at St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center (SJWMC) in Wayne.

Our emergency department is one of the busiest and most innovative in the nation. This year we will care for over 160,000 patients while keeping the average time to see a doctor at about 30 minutes. Located in the the brand-new 230,000 square foot Critical Care Building. Our state-of-the-art department has been streamlined to get the right care to each patient as quickly as possible. Our facilities include specialized units for trauma, critical care, pediatrics (24/7), geriatrics, psychiatric emergencies, palliative medicine and ambulatory complaints.
Our experts include 50 Board-certified physicians many of whom are fellowship trained in sub-specialties that include: pediatric emergencies, toxicology, EMS, Ultrasound, Neurologic Emergencies, Palliative and Hospice Care, Family medicine and International medicine. Our physicians work collaboratively with the 125 nurses and 100+ allied health professions that make up the rest of our emergency department family. The care we provide is truly a team-based effort.
As part of St. Joe’s mission to provide medical education our department is the host to a four-year residency in emergency medicine founded in 2004. Each year our 24 emergency medicine residents are joined by over 80 other rotating residents, 120 medical students , and numerous nursing, medical tech and paramedic/EMT students to create a vibrant center for clinical education.

- Car Seat Safety Technicians - Check the installation of your baby's car seat.

St. Joseph’s Wayne Emergency Department is proud to serve the emergency care needs of its community: the residents of Wayne and the surrounding towns of Passaic, Bergen, and Morris counties. We evaluate and treat close to 30,000 patients of all ages annually. Our ED features a 20-bed treatment area, including a critical care area, negative pressure rooms, and a decontamination area.
An emergency situation may arise at any given time for any one of us. Our dedicated Emergency Department staff is specially trained and well prepared to treat your or your family’s unexpected emergency 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our team of emergency medical professionals includes board certified physicians, physician assistants, registered nurses, and support staff. All our nurses hold certifications in basic life support, advanced cardiac life support, and pediatric advanced life support. Additional skills includes trauma nursing core training, decon and hazmat training, and national certifications in emergency nursing. The Emergency Department is supported by a full range of diagnostic services offered by St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center, as well by specialized service lines available at nearby St. Joseph’s University Medical Center.
