Encouraging a Love for Reading

asdMotivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and in creating lifelong successful leaders. In celebration of Read Across America Day (Dr. Seuss’s Birthday), Sr. Francis Raftery, SC, Patient Relations Coordinator, St. Joseph’s Health enthusiastically shared ‘On Beyond Zebra’ by Dr. Seuss with a classroom of 3-year-olds at the Paterson Family Center (PFC) Preschool in Paterson’s historic district. This is just one of the many ways that St. Joseph’s Health propels its Mission to reaching out and giving back to the surrounding community.

About Paterson Family Center
The PFC provides 105 three- and four-year-old Paterson children with age-appropriate curriculum and qualified staff committed to their growth and education. Founded by New Jersey Community Development Center (NJCDC), PFC offers support to the entire family through after-school programming that supports working parents, as well as clinical staff to connect families to needed resources.

Research Innovations at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center

Advances in research at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center are guiding clinicians at the Paterson healthcare facility, and across the nation.

Researchers in the Pulmonary Department at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, led by Vincent A. DeBari, PhD, Director, Resident Research, St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, including Balwinder Kang, MD, Graduate, Internal Medicine Residency, M. Anees Khan, MD, Pulmonologist, Nader A. Mahmood, MD, Graduate, Pulmonary Fellow, and Jacob Mathew, MD, current 5thyear Pulmonary Fellow, recently had the results of a study they conducted on a common, yet little used blood test known as RDW (red cell distribution width) published in the International Journal of Critical Illness and Injury Science (Vol. 4 Issue 4). The researchers’ findings in “Broadening of the red blood cell distribution width is associated with increased severity of illness in patients with sepsis” revealed that RDW helped identify sepsis more efficiently than the standard APACHE II (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II) scoring system. By identifying sepsis more efficiently, this test aides in initiating earlier treatment, thus optimizing patient care and outcomes. St. Joseph’s is proud to provide another innovative solution to advance the forefront of care for our patients.

PSE&G and SJWMC Complete $4 Million in Energy Efficiency Upgrades

UntitledPublic Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) and St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center marked the completion of $4 million in energy efficiency improvements that will save the acute care community hospital more than $435,000 annually in utility costs and improve the comfort and convenience of patients, staff and visitors.

“The benefits of improving energy efficiency at hospitals like St. Joseph’s Wayne extends far beyond just electric and gas savings,” said Joe Forline, Vice President, Customer Solutions, PSE&G. “Hospitals are a vital resource for our customers and the communities we serve.”

The work was completed through the PSE&G Hospital Efficiency Program, a $129 million effort by New Jersey’s oldest and largest gas and electric utility that is helping 33 hospitals to better manage their energy consumption. The energy efficiency improvements at St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center included the installation of new burners for the heating boilers and new air conditioning chillers, as well as the installation of other energy efficient equipment including lighting and ventilation controls.

“The upgraded equipment installed through the PSE&G Hospital Efficiency Program has a broad impact at St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center, from enhancing our patient care environments to reducing our electric and gas consumption and controlling our overall environmental impact,” said Daniel Kline, Vice President, St. Joseph’s Health, and Site Administrator, St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center.

In addition to the dollar savings, the energy efficiency work at St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center will save more than 2.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and 84,000 therms of natural gas annually. That is enough electricity to power about 350 homes for a year and enough natural gas to supply about 85 homes for a year.

“Greater efficiency and greener outcomes are important components of our facilities infrastructure at St. Joseph’s. The PSE&G Hospital Efficiency Program positively impacted these areas,” said Scott Reilly, Director, Facilities and Engineering, St. Joseph’s Health.

Through the Hospital Efficiency Program, PSE&G provides an investment-grade audit at no cost to the hospital, then proposes various cost effective energy conservation measures that will make substantial improvements in the hospital’s efficient use of energy with a payback period of less than 15 years. The program greatly reduces the financial burden on a hospital by providing up-front funding for the total cost of a project. The hospital then pays back a portion of the total project cost after the project is complete through its PSE&G bill at zero percent interest over 36 months.

A Leader in Nursing: Eddie Perez, RN

A Leader in Nursing Eddie PerezThe Institute for Nursing, the Foundation of the New Jersey State Nurses Association, honored the unique contributions of nineteen New Jersey nurses at their 2014 Divas and Dons in Nursing celebration. Among those honored was Eddie Perez, RN, MHA, NE-BC, Director of Nursing, Medical Surgical Division at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, Paterson, NJ.

Best practices, uniform in their key processes, are communicated fluidly, resulting in improved quality outcomes and patient care. A highly respected mentor, Eddie is recognized as a resource for success.

One of Eddie’s biggest contributions to nursing has been his leadership in the implementation of Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) throughout St. Joseph’s Health, state-wide and nationally. His expertise of the program has made him a nationally recognized speaker on the topic, and his championing of TCAB has led to its spread onto other nursing units and non-nursing departments within St. Joseph’s. Additionally, in collaboration with the New Jersey Hospitals Association, Eddie serves as the Program Trainer for the TCAB state-wide initiative.
