A Leader in Nursing: Eddie Perez, RN

A Leader in Nursing Eddie PerezThe Institute for Nursing, the Foundation of the New Jersey State Nurses Association, honored the unique contributions of nineteen New Jersey nurses at their 2014 Divas and Dons in Nursing celebration. Among those honored was Eddie Perez, RN, MHA, NE-BC, Director of Nursing, Medical Surgical Division at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, Paterson, NJ.

Eddie has been with St. Joseph’s since 2009, when he joined the organization as Nurse Manager of the 33-bed Medical Surgical Unit. In 2010, he was promoted to his current position in which he now oversees seven in-patient units that employ over 250 full-time patient care providers. With responsibilities that range from establishing goals that improve the quality of nursing care, to managing budgets and working collaboratively with other disciplines, Eddie has built cohesiveness among the units. Best practices, uniform in their key processes, are communicated fluidly, resulting in improved quality outcomes and patient care. A highly respected mentor, Eddie is recognized as a resource for success.

One of Eddie’s biggest contributions to nursing has been his leadership in the implementation of Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) throughout St. Joseph’s Health, state-wide and nationally. His expertise of the program has made him a nationally recognized speaker on the topic, and his championing of TCAB has led to its spread onto other nursing units and non-nursing departments within St. Joseph’s. Additionally, in collaboration with the New Jersey Hospitals Association, Eddie serves as the Program Trainer for the TCAB state-wide initiative.

“The Diva and Don event offers organizations the opportunity to nominate a professional registered nurse who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and is a positive influence on others – Eddie has been and continues to be just that,” comments Maria Brennan, DPN, RN, CPHQ, Chief Nursing Officer, SJH, and Vice President, Patient Care Services, SJUMC. “A sought-after speaker who represents St. Joseph’s on a national level, Eddie is a strong leader who is committed to the Mission of St. Joseph’s Health, making him an invaluable asset to our superior nursing team,” she adds.
