SJHS Recognizes Paterson EMTsPaterson, NJ [May 12, 2010]– St. Joseph's Healthcare System (SJHS) recognized Paterson Fire Department Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) Ruth Hillas and James Ona with the Defibrillation Lifesaver Award for their rapid and professional lifesaving treatment of a patient in distress. EMTs Hillas and Ona were recently dispatched to aid a patient, who suddenly lapsed into cardiac arrest. Cadiopulmonary resuscitation (C.P.R) was immediately initiated and an automated external defibrillator (A.E.D.) was applied to the patient's chest. As the EMTs prepared to resume CPR, the patient regained consciousness. The patient was quickly transferred to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) where an obstructed coronary artery was successfully revascularized and the patient was able to return home a few day after.

EMTs Hillas and Ona displayed the highest standards of emergency medical services care. Great things happen everyday in medicine, and St. Joseph's is proud to have the opportunity to recognize two of the many people who help make success stories a reality.
