Program Overview

Welcome to St. Joseph’s Orthopedic Surgery Residency at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center. We are committed to providing a strong foundation in general orthopaedics with broad subspecialty exposure since 1959.  Our program consists of a unique combination of private practice and academic hospital exposure. This gives residents experience in the 'privademic' model of care.

Our educational philosophy is simple – becoming a competent and confident orthopedic surgeon requires personalized mentorship with an emphasis on hands-on training. Our operative experience is early and often, beginning day 1 as an intern, with graduating residents logging almost 2,000 procedures. With 15 residents and over 40 orthopedic surgeons, cases involve 1:1 individualized attention and mentorship with the attending physician. This close working relationship facilitates resident growth and maximizes hands-on experience. In addition, our faculty have trained at some of the best and most respected institutions across the nation and work with athletes at the high school, collegiate (Seton Hall), and professional levels (New York Jets). As a result, we routinely have strong fellowship placement; providing residents with career opportunities in both private and academic orthopedic practices. We take great pride in the number of faculty that return to St. Joseph’s, which speaks to the camaraderie developed amongst the faculty and staff.

Our academic medical center is located in Paterson, NJ, and is home to the busiest emergency department in the state, and the fifth busiest in the nation. As a major teaching hospital with several medical school affiliations, St. Joseph’s is on the forefront of medical education and provides all the advantages of both academic-based and community-based experiences. After the recent completion of our $250 million expansion and renovation project, our residents train in a state-of-the-art facility that includes 12 new operating rooms, access to robotic and minimally-invasive surgical techniques, a same-day surgical center, and an 88-bed emergency room with 5 state-of-the-art trauma bays and a rooftop helipad.  Residents also gain further operative experience at St. Joseph’s Wayne – a community hospital only a short distance away from our main campus.  Our residents are based out of our new Orthopedic Surgery Conference Room, which is conveniently located across the hall from our private orthopedic floor.

Each resident has access to two full-time research assistants. Additionally, our residents find our unique proximity to New York City (less than 30 minutes) and surrounding areas (e.g. Hoboken, Jersey City) ideal for life outside of the hospital.
