Program Overview

St. Joseph’s University Medical Center has a rich, 150 year history. It has once again been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the New York metropolitan area’s finest hospitals and was named by the Leapfrog Group as one of the nation’s top 53 teaching hospitals. Both the hospital and the Ob/Gyn department continue to grow, providing our residents with the finest clinical and academic training in a world-class institution.

With 12 residents, our program is a comfortable size allowing for a “small-program” feel with personalized attention in a “large-program” setting with all the necessary resources, the latest educational modalities and broad clinical experiences. As a major teaching hospital with several medical school affiliations including Rowan University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine and St. George’s University School of Medicine, our residents experience all the advantages of both university-based and community-based training.  Teaching medical students and learning how to teach are integral components of our training.

With the recent completion of St. Joseph’s Critical Care Building, residents train in an ultra-modern, state-of-the-art facility encompassing new operating rooms, intensive care units, a same-day surgical facility and emergency rooms. The area around the hospital has also changed with new eateries, businesses, a fitness center, a new parking garage and affordable resident/student housing.

Within our program we are leaders in minimally invasive surgery along with providing education for the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System.   Our program’s subspecialties include Maternal Fetal Medicine, Urogynecolgy, REI and Gynecology Oncology.  We take pride in serving a multi-cultural and diverse patient population and are also the largest recipient of charity care in the state of New Jersey.  St. Joseph’s Health is a Level II Trauma Center, tertiary center and designated Children’s Hospital.

During the recent pandemic, the Department of Ob/Gyn was tasked with caring for the most critically ill Obstetric victims of the disease.   Both the faculty and residents stepped up and embraced this incredible challenge. The teamwork and dedication was remarkable as we all learned together how to best combat this unique disease.

We take great pride in the number of graduates who stay on as attendings to train the next generation of residents.   We have retained nine  former Residents in the past six years.  Please explore our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter links to learn more about our hospital, our department and our training program. Welcome to St. Joe’s!
