CME Mission Statement

St. Joseph’s Health (SJH) is an academic institution improving health through collaborative discoveries and innovation in patient care, education and research. SJH fosters knowledge exchange across research and patient-care settings. Faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, students, and physicians in the broader medical community engage in interdisciplinary efforts to incorporate this knowledge into clinical practice.

Purpose

The SJH Continuing Medical Education (CME) program promotes continuous improvement in patient health care by providing physicians and other health care professionals with high quality, evidence-based educational activities focusing on advances in medicine, medical technology, biomedical research, and changes in the health care environment. The overall goal of the program is to improve patient safety and outcomes by enhancing physician knowledge, competence and performance in practice.

Content

SJH’s CME program includes a broad range of primary care, specialty and subspecialty topics chosen through a comprehensive needs assessment process. The needs assessment process identifies professional practice gaps in physician knowledge, competence and/or performance, defined as differences between current practice and best practice. Continuing medical education content is chosen for its relevance to the target audience's current or potential scope of professional activities. CME activities are chosen with the expectation of changing competence, performance, and/or patient outcomes. CME activities are chosen in educational formats appropriate for the setting, objectives and desired results of the activity. CME activities are developed in the context of desirable physician attributes, including Institute of Medicine and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Competencies. CME activities are developed independent of commercial interests; however, when applicable, CME activities receiving commercial support are managed according to ACCME Standards for Commercial Support. CME activities are developed to maintain a separation of promotion from education. CME activities are designed to promote improvements in health care and not proprietary commercial interests.
