The Child Care Center

The Child Care Center at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center provides quality child care to children between the ages of 2 months and 5 years whose parents are employees of St. Joseph’s. During the summer months and school holidays, we also provide care to children ages 6 to 13 years. We are open from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday, 52 weeks a year, closing only for major holidays and conveniently located across from the St. Joseph's University Medical Center, 800 Main St. in Paterson, NJ 07503. Children may be enrolled for five or fewer days.

The Child Care Center is licensed by the State of New Jersey’s Department of Children and Families. We are also Nationally Accredited through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

We provide a program designed to foster the child’s development in a comfortable and encouraging environment. Our classrooms are engaging, safe, and nurturing, and support all areas of development. We ensure that each child develops physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually, and is able to meet his or her full potential. Children leave us to enter Kindergarten fully prepared to meet the complex demands presented to them.

The teaching faculty is among the most highly qualified in New Jersey. They have each studied child development and early childhood education, and receive ongoing training while employed with us to increasingly strengthen their understanding and pedagogy.

We work closely with each child’s family, so that a relationship of mutual support is developed. In this way, a partnership is created to ensure the wellbeing of the child and family.

Below is a list of programs available at the Child Care Center listed by age.

Infants: 2 months to 18 months

During these first few months, the focus is on relationships, motor development, and sensory experiences. The youngest infants especially need to feel a sense of security to develop trust in those that care for them. To help with this, our teachers work closely with the families to ensure that there is consistency between home and classroom, so that children are comfortable in knowing what to expect. The babies are with the same caregivers every day, so that they are able to develop the necessary attachments to ensure optimal development. They are also provided with opportunities to move and explore, so that they learn about their own abilities and the world around them.

Toddlers: 18 months to 36 months

Although relationships continue to be important, the focus now becomes autonomy, the development of the child’s own identity. The children are now learning more about who they are. They are using the motor abilities developed in the previous months to assert themselves on the world, to gain independence and a sense of self. We provide a safe and supportive environment to ensure that, while they learn colors and shapes, they can also develop this important self concept. Language is flourishing at this time, and so we provide a language rich environment to help them develop vocabulary, and strong supports to enable them to learn to be a part of their classroom community.

Preschool: 3-5 years

We provide a positive classroom environment where children are surrounded by caring adults. Our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure optimal learning, based on each individual child’s strengths and interests. Children are challenged and supported as they learn important concepts in language, science, and math and also have opportunities to express themselves through creative explorations. Throughout the day they are provided with opportunities to interact with each other so that they develop the ability to negotiate and cooperate, and to learn to express their emotions. The children are engaged and active in fun and stimulating activities.

School Age Program: 6 to 13 years

We provide care to school age children during school vacations and the summer. Children are engaged in fun and stimulating hands-on activities. Activities provided are open ended, allowing for creative exploration, problem solving, and active learning. Children spend time in outdoor activities, art, science and nature, and more.

We are located at 800 Main St. in Paterson, NJ 07503 .
