NJN News Reports on Heart Health of Firefighters - News and Features

According to a Harvard Study Firefighters are 100 times more likely to suffer a fatal heart attack while on the job than any other workers. St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center's Dr. Frank Yuppa has been striving to educate firefighters about their increased risk for heart attack. The adrenaline levels rise during the fire as does the stress combined with communal kitchens combined with foods that are not considered heart healthy. According to Dr. Yuppa it is the soft plaque that causes a greater risk due to its ability to break off and cause a sudden heart attack. Dr. Yuppa is encouraging firefighters to get a calcium scoring test for firefighters over 40. It is a 30-second scan of the heart that can help detect patients at higher risk. The test is offered at $100 discount for firefighters and can be the catalyst to a healthier heart with less plaque buildup and risk for heart attack.
