Limiting Strokes - Take Care

Featured guests include Robert Amoruso, MD, FCCP, Chairman of Medicine for St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson NJ and Avery Katz, MD, Chief of Neurology at SJRMC to discuss the affects of strokes with Dr. Max Gomez on Take Care.
Strokes can leave victims with great disabilities even preventing their ability to walk leaving them injured for life. The segment features recent stroke victim Teddy Lee who sought treatment at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center after a very traumatic wake-up call. Typical features are a numbness of the body or drooping of the face as well as slurring of speech. The key in terms of determining the mobility and functionality of the victim after the incident is time it takes to treat the patient, faster treatment equates to greater return of function.
The types of strokes depend on the circulation to the brain that becomes stopped or "plugged" that causes the stroke. As a result of these discoveries hospitals have reorganized their stroke procedures to a much more time-centric flow throughout the emergency department and hospital in general leading to the development of the "stroke code."
Anna Sferrazza is also highlighted as a patient of St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center who suffered from a stroke while near the hospital and received treatment within the 3 hour window and suffered no lasting symptoms. Risk factors include high cholesterol, blood pressure, lifestyle issues such as high-stress and dietary habits. Prevention is key, there are medicines that increase risk of stroke as well as obesity and diabetes that put people at greater risk.
