Oral Health and Cardiac - Health Tips

Presenting Hillel Ephros, DMD, MD, Chairman, Dept. of Dentistry and Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery, SJRMC, to discuss the connection between good oral hygiene and reduced risks for cardiac health issues.
The mouth is a mirror of your general health, poor oral health may raise your risk of heart attack or stroke. The mouth harbors a great number of bacteria that may make people susceptible to the effects of chronic infection or inflammation. It is also believed that good ongoing oral hygiene is a way of reducing those risks, good quality brushing and flossing are included. People with prosthetic or diseased heart valves may be affected with further damage when oral bacteria are released into the blood stream. Patients taking blood thinners and other heart medications should discuss these with their dentists as well.
