Peptic Ulcer Disease - Health Tips

Presenting Gary J. Kosc, MD, Gastroenterologist, Board Certified, St. Joseph's Healthcare System, to discuss symptoms, causes of and ways to help heal Peptic Ulcer Disease.
Peptic Ulcer Disease symptoms include pain or discomfort (usually in the upper abdomen), bloating, early sense of fullness with eating, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, blood in the stools/black tarry stools. Peptic Ulcer is caused by, a bacterial infection found in the stomach, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, naproxen, ibuprofen), and chronic damage to the stomach by increased digestive juices such as bile. Complications include bleeding and perforation which can be life threatening. You can help an ulcer heal by, treating the specific cause of the ulcer, stop smoking, avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs if possible, avoid caffeine containing foods, avoid alcohol until ulcer is fully healed, and reduce stress. Herbal medications and supplements appear to have no impact on treating the disease. If symptoms persist more than 5-7 days on over-the-counter medications contact your doctor to avoid further complications.
