Traumatic Brain Injuries - Take Care

Presenting Carl Valenziano, MD, Director of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Max Gomez brings you information on healing traumatic brain injuries. Nearly 1.5 million people in the U.S. sustain a brain injury every year resulting in severe emotional and physical damage which can prove fatal. Carl Valenziano, MD, Director of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, discusses the range of injuries and notes how the skull protects the brain to an extent but if hit the brain will bounce back and forth. In the field, breathing is the largest issue, but once at the hospital brain swelling or bleeding are the biggest issues with brain damage. Many different approaches such as administering medicine or putting the brain to sleep through drug-induced comas and hypothermia are all taken into approach to preserve the brain. Dr. Gomez highlights two victim's stories, Michelle and Will. Getting hit in the head and especially on a recurring basis can cause cumulative damage and make the brain injury more serious. Traumatic injury will most likely always leave you with lasting permanent damage. The most important note to keep in my mind is to be as safe as possible in all actions.
