Treating Peripheral Artery Disease Quickly and Effectively - News and Features

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) afflicts approximately 1 in 5 adults over the age of 70. Learn how St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center helps patients struggling with PAD in a news report featured on CBS 2 News.
There is new high tech help for Peripheral Artery Disease, which is caused by blockage in the arteries of the legs. Lack of blood flow can cause pain, leading to ulcers, gang green and even amputation. Until recently treatment for the condition was restricted to bypass surgery or balloons and stents. Dr. David Cohen for St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center describes the issue further noting the problem with bypass surgery that there's a lot of risk to it and it is a big operation, pushing the plaque aside with balloons also is not the most effective method. Now Dr. Cohen utilizes new technology called the diamond back which utilizes a small disk covered in diamond dust that spins at an accelerated rate inside the leg artery grinding away even the largest build ups of plaque in the arteries. The particles left from the procedure turn out to be smaller than blood cells and are easily and quickly filtered out by the body downstream. The procedure is quick and efficient and most patients will have full mobility the next day.
