Orthopedic Injuries - Take Care

Join featured guests Dr. Vincent McInerney, Orthopedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine Specialist, Dr. Depak Patel, Orthopedist, at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center and Bob Narcessian, Movement Scientist, as they help to investigate what medicine is doing to help those with orthopedic injuries.
With age comes a loss of compensation for faulty mechanics, in order to prevent serious injuries, knowledge of how to move correctly and bend down correctly is imperative. The segments highlight two maturing people who have suffered injuries as a result of being "weekend warriors" or people who can only exercise on the weekends. Dr. McInerney explains the pressures of returning to sports after injuries too soon resulting in even more damaging injuries than the initial injury. The risk is that the tissue may not be healed, full movement of the joint can cause pain which serves as a crucial warning sign that the injury is not yet healed. Injuries in the knee caps are much more common than ACL tears, age impacts these injuries as well leading to arthritis. Microtraumatic injuries are frequently occurring injuries that cause pain and symptoms but are ignorable until victims continue pushing themselves and cause serious damage resulting in a much more noticeable injury that forces them into a longer recovery process as a result of the build-up. The segment focuses on one college-aged tennis player who did not need surgery or therapy but just practiced different methods of shoulder rotation under the guidance of Narcessian and no longer experiences pain in her shoulder after meets. Even when surgery is necessary the rehabilitation of muscles in the body takes a very long time to increase range of motion before return to the activity is possible.
