St. Joseph's Wins the Magnet Prize for Nursing - About St. Joseph's

Maria Brennan talks about the hospital system and the amazing nurses who have again procured a magnet award. The beauty of the magnet program is that it really articulated what the practice of professional nursing looks like. St. Joseph's started their Magnet journey in 1997, we did receive the Magnet recognition for the first time in 1999, again in 2003 and again in 2008 and we're in the application process for the redesignation in 2012.
The Magnet program recognizes hospitals who have achieved nursing excellence. Nursing excellence as defined and articulated by the Magnet program incorporates nursing practice and professional nursing in five elements, transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice and new knowledge innovations as well as empirical outcomes. With each new application that you put through you do need to push the envelope, what is it that you've done now, in the last 4 years how did you change the practice of nursing or how did you impact patient care and change the life of the patient. That's where we've really grown as an organization in the last 10 years that we've been a Magnet facility we really have added to and increased the body of knowledge of nursing and certainly that has been impacted on our patient care evidence and outcomes.
The video focuses on the Women's Heart Center and the function of the center as well as how it has grown over the past and has improved nursing care in the community of Paterson, NJ.
Magnet means that you attract and retain the best nurses your turnover rates are lower, your retention rates are higher, Nursing satisfaction scores for job enjoyment and professional enjoyment of their practice is certainly much higher as well. Research then looked at patient outcomes, the happier a nurse is and the more satisfied and gratified by their nursing practice and in a particular environment they're going to have better patient outcomes.
"We have a great nursing department and the Magnet award just verifies all the work that all the nurses do," Maria Brennan, MSN, RN, CPHQ, Chief Nursing Officer.
