Heart Health and Blood Pressure Tips - Health Tips

Carolyn Strimike, APN, Women's Heart Center, St. Joseph's Healthcare System, discusses the importance of monitoring your blood pressure for a healthy heart.
High blood pressure is often referred to as the silent killer since it does not often associate with symptoms. It is important to get your blood pressure checked on a regular basis. The top number is called the Systolic number which measures how hard your heart is working in order to pump blood and circulate it throughout the body.
The second number is the Diastolic number which measures how well the blood is able to circulate throughout important parts of the body. Presently for men and women the normal blood pressure is considered 120/80.
True high blood pressure is considered 140/90 or greater. Most people with high blood pressure need medications to help to control blood pressure but can also limit sodium, caffeine and alcohol they consume daily, eat more of food high in potassium, maintain an appropriate weight, and get into a regular exercise routine as well as reduce their stress levels. Even small changes in your lifestyle can have a dramatic impact on lowering your risk of heart disease.
