Winter Storm Safety - Health Tips

Michael Morrello, Safety Director, St. Joseph's Healthcare System, discusses winter storm safety tips.
Stay indoors during the storm, if you must go outside layers of clothing will keep you warmer than a single coat. Cover your mouth to protect lungs, wear gloves and mittens or a hat to prevent loss of body heat. Walk carefully on icy or snowy sidewalks.
If shoveling snow take frequent breaks and avoid overexertion, heart attacks are a leading cause of deaths during the winter. Avoid travelling by car, keep gas tanks full for emergency use, let someone know your destination, route, and when you're expected to arrive.
If you become stuck stay with your car, do not attempt to walk away for safety, do tie a brightly covered item of cloth to the antenna outside so you can be seen. Start the car and use the heater for about 10 minutes every hour but remember to keep the exhaust pipe clear so fumes do not back up into the car. Leave the overhead light on when the engine is running so you may be seen inside the car. While sitting move arms and legs to keep blood circulating and keep one window open to let in air. After the storm, avoid driving until conditions have improved, help neighbors who may require special assistance.
Take the advice of the Red Cross and have a memorable and safe winter season.
