Most Americans indicate that at the end of life they would like to be in charge about decisions about the kind of medical care they receive. A living will is very important in terms of having your wishes respected when you can no longer speak for yourself.
In NJ you have 3 options available to you, you can express your wishes in writing about the care you'd like to receive at the end of life, you can appoint someone to have the authority to speak for you, or you can express your wishes in writing and appoint someone to represent you as well. Your family are obliged to respect the wishes you have indicated. At St. Joseph's the forms are available in the department of pastoral care and the department of patient relations as well as on all nursing units.
