Aphasia Awareness Month - Health Tips

Featuring Dana Reiner, RN, MSN, APN,C Nurse Practitioner in Neurology for St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center to discuss stroke for Aphasia Awareness month in June.
Aphasia can be a symptom of stroke. Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States. Signs of stroke are sudden numbness of movement on the face, arm, or leg and especially on one side of the body; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding; sudden trouble walking, with dizziness, or loss of balance and coordination; sudden severe headache with no known cause. If you experience any of these symptoms you should contact 911 immediately.
Use the acronym F.A.S.T. when trying to remember symptoms. F is for face, ask the person to smile to see if one side droops, A is for arms, ask the person to raise both arms to see if one drifts downwards, S is for speech, ask the person to repeat a simple sentence to see if their words are slurred or they can repeat the sentence correctly, and T is for time, if the person demonstrates any of these symptoms time is crucial.
