Program Information

Welcome to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center's General Surgery Residency Program's website, we thank you for your interest. St. Joseph's is a state designated Trauma Center and we offer an exciting residency committed to training the highest level of physician and skilled surgeon. Our vision is graduating the very best academically based, broadly trained, self-sufficient surgeons who can move directly into fellowship or practice with equal confidence. All specialties are represented on premises, and essentially most of your training will be conducted at St. Joseph's. Our residents participate in two outside rotations: one at Holy Name Hospital, in Teaneck, NJ and other at Jersey City Medical Center, Jersey City, NJ. We have a very dedicated teaching faculty of more than 50 Board Certified surgeons covering General Surgery, Trauma, Critical Care, Pediatric Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Cardiothoracic, ENT, Urology, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Residents are involved in managing trauma on a daily basis. We saw more than 1500 major trauma cases in 2012. Our Emergency Department volume is the busiest in the state with over 142,000 recorded visits in 2012. The recently opened state-of-the-art Critical Care building has expanded our ED, adding 56 Critical Care beds, 12 new operating theaters and a new rooftop helipad capable of accepted larger medical helicopters with emergency procedure space. In 2012, we utilized the medivac/helipad system 55 times.

CCB HelipadSt. Joseph's Regional Medical Center is a major affiliate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine; and we are a fully accredited AOA/ACOS program. This residency program was started in 2009. We are a relatively new program, currently we have 17 residents and anticipate to grow our program to 20 residents in 2014. Residents can expect to scrub on average 1,400 cases during their training here. To date our graduates have been successfully recruited to fellowship programs in Burn (Jacobi, NY), Hand (Louisville), Breast (Cleveland) and Bariatric Surgery (Hackensack).

Facility and Location

We are located in a medically underserved area and provide care for a culturally diverse population. St. Joseph's Healthcare System launched a $250 million expansion and renovation investment project at both St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center/St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Paterson, NJ and St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital in Wayne, NJ. The construction project is meeting the growing demand for inpatient and outpatient care at both campuses.
