PSE&G and SJWMC Complete $4 Million in Energy Efficiency Upgrades

Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) and St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center marked the completion of $4 million in energy efficiency improvements that will save the acute care community hospital more than $435,000 annually in utility costs and improve the comfort and convenience of patients, staff and visitors. 

“The benefits of improving energy efficiency at hospitals like St. Joseph’s Wayne extends far beyond just electric and gas savings,” said Joe Forline, Vice President, Customer Solutions, PSE&G. “Hospitals are a vital resource for our customers and the communities we serve.”

The work was completed through the PSE&G Hospital Efficiency Program, a $129 million effort by New Jersey’s oldest and largest gas and electric utility that is helping 33 hospitals to better manage their energy consumption. The energy efficiency improvements at St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center included the installation of new burners for the heating boilers and new air conditioning chillers, as well as the installation of other energy efficient equipment including lighting and ventilation controls.

“The upgraded equipment installed through the PSE&G Hospital Efficiency Program has a broad impact at St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center, from enhancing our patient care environments to reducing our electric and gas consumption and controlling our overall environmental impact,” said Daniel Kline, Vice President, St. Joseph’s Health, and Site Administrator, St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center.

In addition to the dollar savings, the energy efficiency work at St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center will save more than 2.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and 84,000 therms of natural gas annually. That is enough electricity to power about 350 homes for a year and enough natural gas to supply about 85 homes for a year.

“Greater efficiency and greener outcomes are important components of our facilities infrastructure at St. Joseph’s. The PSE&G Hospital Efficiency Program positively impacted these areas,” said Scott Reilly, Director, Facilities and Engineering, St. Joseph’s Health.                                                                            

Through the Hospital Efficiency Program, PSE&G provides an investment-grade audit at no cost to the hospital, then proposes various cost effective energy conservation measures that will make substantial improvements in the hospital’s efficient use of energy with a payback period of less than 15 years. The program greatly reduces the financial burden on a hospital by providing up-front funding for the total cost of a project. The hospital then pays back a portion of the total project cost after the project is complete through its PSE&G bill at zero percent interest over 36 months.
