Gastroenterology
The Division of Gastroenterology provides expert consultative, diagnostic and therapeutic care to treat all forms of digestive diseases.

Our Board-certified physicians use the latest technology, research, and medical advances to deliver comprehensive gastroenterological diagnosis and treatment to our patients.

Care is provided both in the new Outpatient Surgery Center in Wayne, at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, and St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital in Wayne for the difficult more complicated cases.

Services Include:
  • EGD (Upper Endoscopy)
  • Colonoscopy
  • ERCP (study of the biliary system and pancreas
  • Sigmoidoscopy- rigid and flexible
  • PEG (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy)- placement of feeding tube
  • Esophageal Manometry- a way to diagnose diseases of function of the esophagus (swallowing tube)
  • 24/48 hour pH study- a test that is useful in helping in the diagnosis of chronic heartburn or reflux. Two different tests can be used, a wireless, tubeless method or one using a fine tube (each test has its own advantages)
  • Hydrogen Breath test- useful in the diagnosis of lactose intolerance or other problems of the small intestine
  • LASER for the treatment of some tumors through a scope
  • Anorectal Manometry- an examination used to diagnose rectal function problems 
  • Liver biopsy

Besides the clinical excellence provided, St. Joseph’s Division of Gastroenterology plays a major role in teaching the subspecialty to the Medical Residents and, especially the Fellows, in one of the largest programs in the United States. The Fellowship program is also involved in Research in different aspects of gastroenterology and has presented the findings at major national conferences.
