 First established in 1974, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital was one of the first regional NICUs in New Jersey. Over the years, nearly 25,000 babies have received an excellent start in life from the experienced neonatal professionals who care for them. About 800 critically ill newborns and premature infants from New Jersey and New York are cared for each year in the NICU. The unit is staffed by ten attending neonatalogists, Board-certified in Pediatrics and Neonatalogy, as well as highly experienced Registered Nurses and Advance Practice Nurses 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Neonatologists work closely with the Perinatal Center prior to birth. Reasons for admissions include prematurity, lung disorders, infections, birth defects, or surgical conditions. Babies admitted to the NICU may have been born at St. Joseph’s or referred from other hospitals. Special Information According to data collected by the Vermont-Oxford Network on low birth weight infants from approximately 300 NICUs throughout the United States and Canada, St. Joseph’s NICU consistently ranks among the top units for survival, critical outcomes, and respiratory management rates. In an effort to support and comfort families, arrangements can be made for overnight accommodations. There is a room dedicated to this use for parents.
