The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) was created by Congress as a result of research findings indicating that a substantial number of pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, infants and children are predisposed to inadequate nutrition due to low income. WIC was created to serve as an adjunct to good health care during critical times of growth and development, to prevent the occurrence of drug abuse, and improve the health status of low income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children. WIC is considered one of the most successful public health programs. WIC provides food vouchers, also known as WIC checks to pregnant and postpartum women, infants and children up to the age of 5 who are at or below 185 percent of federal poverty guidelines. St. Joseph Regional Medical Center’s WIC Program serves three counties – all of Bergen and Morris Counties and Passaic County with the exception of the city of Passaic. There are currently 17 WIC sites in the three counties including three in the city of Paterson. The St. Joseph’s WIC program is the second largest program in New Jersey, serving more than 20,000 participants a month.
