Training Sites
Curriculum, Rotation, and Schedule St. Joseph’s offers students the following array of core rotations, sub-internships and electives. Core There are twelve-week rotations in medicine and surgery, six week rotations in Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Obstetrics/Gynecology, and a four to six week rotation in Family Practice that can be taken as a core or an elective. This rotation satisfies the requirement for primary care. Sub-Internships The sub-internships include eight weeks in medicine and four weeks in pediatrics. Medical Students have the opportunity to train in an Interns role in the 4th year of medical school. Electives are available in adult and pediatric sub-specialties in the areas listed below: Adult
Pediatrics
Medical Students are expected to maintain individual logs of their patient encounters, as well as a log that delineates procedures performed by the students or witnessed by an attending. Students are expected to write in the progress notes, identifying themselves with the designation “medical student year 3 or year 4.” On-Call Schedule Students on sub-internships are assigned to a team and function basically as a first year resident. The on-call schedule for most of the rotations for students in their fourth year is every fourth night. Students on their core rotations, except for surgery, are expected to remain until 11:00 p.m. Services Cancer Center A pioneer of various treatments of cancer, St. Joseph’s has a weekly Tumor Board meeting and schedules prestigious guest speakers on a regular basis. Stroke Center The Neurology Stroke Unit at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center has recently expanded to 16 monitored beds with a “Neurology Special Care Unit”. The nurses are specially trained in Stroke and Neurologic care. The stroke program has also been recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines Program and has received the Bronze and Silver Award for quality stroke care. This designation recognizes rapid response to stroke by stroke experts with the latest diagnostic and therapeutic developments in the field. Primary and Comprehensive Stroke Centers adhere to State and National Standards for stroke care and patient outcomes. Stroke Centers must be prepared 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to rapidly assess and treat patients with stroke and stroke like symptoms. St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center has earned the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval ™ for Primary Stroke Center and has been designated as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. Trauma Center St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center is a state-designated Level II regional trauma center where, each year, approximately 1,300 trauma cases are cared for by our trauma teams. The trauma service includes an in-hospital trauma team and a mobile intensive care unit. The Emergency Department includes an adult and separate Pediatric Emergency Department staffed with Board-certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine physicians. |
