St. Joseph’s Healthcare System cares for many different patients with a variety of health concerns every day. Each moment is a unique opportunity to make medical history. Some of our highlights since the turn of the century include:
 
In 1999, Nurses at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center/St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital received the Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence for the first time in 1999; redesignated in 2003 and again in 2008. This designation places St. Joseph’s in the top 4 percent of hospitals in the United States. 
 
In 2000, St. Joseph’s physicians successfully separated conjoined twins, the first surgery of its type in New Jersey.
 
In 2001, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System’s Dialysis Center opened on the Paterson campus. To date, St. Joseph’s remains the largest hospital based dialysis center in New Jersey.
 
In 2002, St. Joseph’s welcomed quintuplets.
 
In 2004, St. Joseph’s partnered with Medical Missions for Children and became the headquarters for the Global Telemedicine Program.
 
William A. McDonald, President and CEO, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, led the New Jersey Council of Teaching Hospitals as Chairman of the Board for two consecutive terms.
 
In 2005, Arash Emami, MD performed New Jersey’s first lumbar disc replacement at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center.
 
In 2006, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System was the first facility in Passaic County to perform 64-Multislice CAT Scanning of the Coronary Arteries, determining Calcium Scoring, the most accurate method to narrow down a person’s risk
 
In 2007, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System launched an oncology clinical collaboration with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, using new high definition Telemedicine Suite at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital.
 
Also in 2007, The Neurology-Stroke Center at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center earns Primary Stroke Center certification and state-designated comprehensive stroke center from the Joint Commission, becoming the only such designated stroke center in Passaic, Essex, Hudson, and Sussex counties.
 
Following the guidelines set by the Sisters of Charity, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System became the 3rd largest provider of charity care in New Jersey in 2007.
 
In 2007, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System was ranked #6 nationwide for total number of American Heart Association – Get With the Guidelines Awards received.
 
The NJ Sharing Network presented St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center with the award for Best Donor Management, recognizing the hospital with the most organs transplanted per donor in 2007.
 
Anthony Laneve, MD, Chief of Internal Medicine, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, received the 2007 Leadership Award presented by the Paterson Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, Inc.
 
In 2007, Arash Emami, MD, Director of Spinal Deformities at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center became the first surgeon in New Jersey trained to perform the PRESTIGE cervical disc replacement procedure and train other surgeons on the procedure.
 
Maria Brennan, MSN, RN, CPHQ, Chief Nursing Officer, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System and Vice President, Patient Care Services, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center was awarded the 2007 Organization of Nurse Executives of New Jersey Nurse Executive Award.
 
Sister Jacqueline Burns, SC, was named New Jersey Council of Teaching Hospitals Trustee of the Year in 2008.
 
Maria Brennan, MSN, RN, CPHQ, Chief Nursing Officer, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System and Vice President, Patient Care Services, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center is named the 2008 Governor’s Nursing Merit Award winner for Nurse Administrator.
 
The Women’s Heart Center was honored by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses with the 2008 Circle of Excellence Award for Community Service.
 
St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center is the only hospital in New Jersey to receive the American Heart Association’s Get With the Guidelinessm Silver Performance Achievement Awards in heart failure, coronary artery disease, and stroke in the spring of 2008.
 
In 2008, and for the second year in a row, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey recognized St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital for outstanding performance and improvement in the areas of patient safety, clinical practices, and patient satisfaction.
 
In June 2008, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center received the American Heart Association’s “Get With The Guidelines” Gold Performance Achievement Awards for heart failure and coronary artery disease.
 
St. Joseph’s is the only New Jersey health system in 2008 with two radiologists who are Level 3 readers, the highest possible level achieved. 
 

In 2008, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center hosted the International Conference on Behavioral Health and Traumatic Brain Injury, bringing together world leaders in the field of brain injury.

 

In 2008, St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center received the Gold Performance Achievement Award for its achievement in implementing the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association "Get With The Guidelines" quality initiatives for Stroke, becoming 1 of only 5 hospitals nationwide to receive this honor.

 

The Women's Heart Center at St. Joseph's received the 2008 Circle of Excellence Award for Community Service from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.


The Center for Pediatric Feeding & Swallowing at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital has received MODERN HEALTHCARE magazine's 2008 Spirit of Excellence C.A.R.E.S. Award.

 

In 2008, St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center was awarded the Medal of Honor for Organ Donation form the US Department of Health and Human Services becoming one of only 13 hospitals in New Jersey to receive this award.

 

The St. Joseph's Healthcare System's nurses were awarded the Trans Atlantic Renal Council Commendation Award for Fistula First Initiative in 2008, an award which is also given to physicians and directors of nursing.

 

The Women's Heart Center at St. Joseph's is the recipient of the prestigious New Jersey Hospital Association 2008 Health Research and Educational Trust of New Jersey's Community Outreach Award for Preventing Disease and Injury.

 

The St. Joseph's Healthcare System's nurses received the NJ Sharing Network's award for Best Donor Management in 2008.
