Presenter:

Milton Villafane Bernard, M.A.

Clinical Psychologist

St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center

More than 11 million children under age 18 live with an alcoholic parent. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, children of alcoholics experience guilt, anxiety, embarrassment, anger and depression and have lower IQ, math, reading and verbal scores.

Mr. Bernard will describe the behavioral signs, including school failure, withdrawal from classmates, or frequent physical complaints that may indicate a parental drinking problem. He will summarize ways to foster emotional resilience in children of alcoholics, discuss the need for professional intervention for both children and parents and provide community resources.

This program will be held at William Paterson University, 1600 Valley Road, Wayne.

Pre-registration is required. Register by phone or on-line at www.wpunj.edu/cpe

Fee: $ 15
