Driver Rehabilitation Program

The Driver Rehabilitation Program at St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital is designed to assist individuals with disabilities or changes related to aging remain safe and independent in driving and community mobility.

 

The program begins with a clinical evaluation that assesses the underlying skills needed for safe driving, including a:

  • Visual screen (such as, acuity and contrast sensitivity)
  • Physical screen (such as, strength, range of motion, driver-vehicle fit and reaction time)
  • Cognitive perceptual screen (such as, attention, decision making and problem solving)
  • Road sign recognition and road situation identification

 

A Behind the Wheel evaluation may also be performed by a licensed driving instructor, click here for additional information, and an occupational therapist. Following the assessment, the therapist will provide recommendations, referrals, counseling and/or educational information. Recommendations may include vehicle modification and/or driving training.
