Caring for close to 130,000 patients in 2011 and expecting near 140,000 in 2012, and utilizing state-of-the-art emergency medicine facilities, St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center's Emergency Department is the busiest in New Jersey, expected to see more than 130,000 patients in 2011.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is proud to host an Academic Associates Program which allows motivated, undergraduate students to participate in the collection of prospective data while observing the state-of-the-art medical care provided to our patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians Annual Meeting

The Department of Emergency Medicine has a number of academic programs. The core of these programs is our Osteopathic Emergency Medicine Residency. Founded in 2004 this four-year program has 24 resident slots (six per year), 9 core faculty positions, and has gained national recognition for research.

Our Geriatric ED is designed especially for patients 65 years of age and older.

The American College of Emergency Physicians determined the importance of geriatric-specific emergency care. St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center is the first hospital in the region to provide a dedicated emergency department for older patients, featuring a 14-bed treatment area with thicker mattresses, natural lighting throughout much of the common areas, and reduced chaos and noise.

Recently St. Joseph's partnered with The Mount Sinai School of Medicine to evaluate geriatric emergency services over the course of three years. Find out more about the program here.
