The School Wellness Programs through St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital are based on the R.U.S.H. Program (Reaching Ultimate Student Health), which is a 6-week program offered to schools in Passaic County and its surrounding communities. Our mission is to decrease childhood obesity within the schools and communities we serve by increasing perceptions and awareness with regards to healthful food choices and physical activity. The R.U.S.H. Program uses 2 government initiatives -- MyPlate and Let’s Move! -- To promote nutrition and physical activity for children in preschool through 8th grade. R.U.S.H. classes, which usually occur once a week, include experiments, worksheets, and physical activities to enhance learning in the classroom. The classes take place during the regular school day and are integrated into regular class time, gym, or health, and are fun and interactive. They are led by Registered Dietitian Nutritionists and Registered Nurses and include guest speakers from St. Joseph’s Health. School wellness activities reach far beyond R.U.S.H. by assisting schools with family nights, field days, and optimizing school and summer feeding programs.
